Day 5: Sunday
Today we began the day with attending Mass at St. Patrick’s
Cathedral. The 10:15 Mass we attended featured a magnificent choir. Even though
the church is currently undergoing construction it was a fun experience to hear
a message from the archbishop of New York.
We took our first trip to the 30 Rock Building for our daily
Starbucks break. After enjoying our coffee treats we made our way over to
Central Park, where stopped at a number of food trucks, and made our way over
to the park to enjoy lunch. We experienced mixed feelings about our food we
ate.
After lunch, we made our way over to the historical aircraft
carrier the “Intrepid” which was used during World War II. Set on the Hudson
River, we enjoyed the views of many airplanes, helicopters, as well as the
interior and exterior of the aircraft itself.
Next, we took the subway over towards Battery Park, where we
boarded the ship “Clipper City”. This modern replica of nineteenth century schooner
took us around the Hudson River where we were able to take in the breathtaking
views of the city and the Statue of Liberty. Most of us were surprised by how
cold the boat ride was, and ended up wrapping in blankets and ordering hot
chocolate – and normal hot chocolate, at that.
Once back ashore, we walked to the subway where we came
across a pleasant surprise – a completely empty train! We all enjoyed this
freedom on the train playing “subway surfing”, creating our own private
jungle-gym aboard a speeding car.
After getting off on our stop, we walked the rest of the way
to the Rockefeller Plaza. After a little trouble we found Chipotle, and ate
there. After a delicious dinner, we had plans to go to Top of the Rock, but had
to reschedule due to the long wait.
Instead we returned to the hotel for the earliest evening so
far, and enjoyed some relaxation.
Walking Stats: 11.2 MILES
